Debunking the Notion that Widows Need Hand-Outs

All over the world, widows are considered helpless, hopeless and women without future. It is same with widowers too. The death of a husband tends to mean an end to dreams, aspirations and the beautiful things of life.
However, from the Scriptures, we are made to understand that it is not so. Widows can be independent, business tycoons, great entrepreneurs, and so on.
Jesus Christ cares about widows and widowers. That is why He is the judge / husband to the widows (Psalm 68:5).
In this short piece, we are going to be unveiling diverse acts of widows that touched heaven and changed their stories / generations for life: THE WIDOW OF ZAREPHATH ( 1Kings 17:11-16) We serve the God of “make for me first’’ (Matthew 6:33). Many people would naturally consider this act of Prophet Elijah as an act of
wickedness or selfishness.
However, when you give something to the promotion of God’s kingdom, your story changes from glory to glory.
Assuming this widow did not obey God first, that would have been the last meal for her and her son ( verse 12). The honor and reverence she had for the man of God, prophet Elijah, made them not to run out
of divine supplies.
THE WIDOW WITH THE OLIVE OIL JAR (2 Kings 4:1-7) This daughter of Zion came to prophet Elisha to complain bitterly; because the late husband’s creditor was threatening to take her two sons to be made slaves.
Crying and complaining did not solve it. The solution was in the question, “what do you have in the house?’’ God will only bless you with the available resources He has given you. Obedience to the prophet’s instruction brought an end to lack and want. The family of this widow became financially independent for life.
There are skills you have and profitable businesses you can venture into instead of wasting money on befitting burial.
ANNA THE PROPHETESS (Luke 2:36-38) She had been a widow for eighty-four (84) years. Anna is a Hebrew name
which means gracious or favored. She only lived with her husband for seven years. The Bible records that, she was consistently in the Temple (at all times), worshipping, praying  and fasting, night and
day. Her life was lived to the praise of God and the spread of the gospel.RUTH (Ruth 1, 2, 3 and 4)
In this time when daughter in-laws do not want to meet their mother-in-laws alive, Ruth did not only become an exception to that, but she also became an example to reckon with by accepting to live with her mother-in-law despite the fact that her husband is late and she is even a Moabite. She is industrious, thoughtful, neat, obedient, honest, she does not care about her needs only. In addition to this, she rises early and everyone testifies that she is a virtuous woman. Her kindness towards her mother-in-law brought her great rewards. She did not only become the wife of Boaz but had her name amongst the books of the Scriptures. By divine privilege, she is the mother of Obed and thes grandmother of Jesse. Amazingly, the lineage of Jesus Christ is traceable to Ruth.
